National Flood Insurance Program

  • Who needs flood insurance? Everyone. And everyone in a participating community of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) can buy flood insurance. Nationwide, almost 20,000 communities have joined the Program.

Town of Andover Hazard Mitigation Plan Meeting
 
The Andover Hazard Mitigation Plan Committee is beginning the process of updating its 2019 Hazard Mitigation Plan. The committee is represented by a variety of local interests including the Fire, Police, EMS, and Highway departments, along with the Planning and Select Boards, a school representative and residents. The group will review the various hazards that put Andover at risk as well as the development of recommendations to protect the safety and well-being of town residents.
 
The committee will meet on June 12 at 4:00 PM at the Andover Fire Station, 169 Main Street. Residents of Andover and representatives from neighboring communities are encouraged to attend. Andover HMP Meeting Agenda.
 
Hazard Mitigation Planning is as important to reducing disaster losses as are appropriate regulations and land use ordinances. The most significant areas of concern for Andover are being reviewed and evaluated through this process; in the 2019 Plan these included winter weather, severe winds, hurricane, flood, and lightning.  
 
With the update to the Hazard Mitigation Plan, town leaders will be able to evaluate the status of current plans, policies, and actions then develop and prioritize actions to reduce the impacts of these and other hazards. Community leaders want the town to be a disaster resistant community and believe that updating the Hazard Mitigation Plan will bring Andover one step closer to that goal.

Hazard Mitigation Plans

  • Recent regulations emphasize the need for State, Tribal, and local entities to closely coordinate mitigation planning and implementation efforts. The Regional Planning Commissions throughout the state have contracted with the New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NH HSEM) to provide technical support to communities in their region during the formation of hazard mitigation strategies. For the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) program, local jurisdictions must have an approved mitigation plan to receive a project grant. Plans approved any time after November 1, 2004 will make communities eligible to receive PDM and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) project grants.
  • LRPC has assisted in the development of the following Hazard Mitigation Plans:
    • Approved by FEMA (as of December 2023) - Belmont, Center Harbor, Effingham, Northfield, Sanbornton, Tuftonboro
    • Under development (as of December 2023) - Andover, Bridgewater, Gilmanton, Moultonborough, Tilton, Wolfeboro
